Ethica Accessories provides employment and income for 150 women and their families living in some of the pooreste areas of Peru, South America. Ethica Accessories is the trading name of the Sisters of St Joseph Peruvian Project Ltd, a member of the Fair Trade Association. The Sisters of St Joseph is the order founded by Mary MacKillop, Australia's first saint. The women in the project receive training and direct payment for their work. The income is spent on doctor's fees, medicines, spectacles, school materials, clothing and food.
The finger puppets are handknitted by a group of women (led by Damiana) in a village called Acora in the Lake Titicaca region. In this region they speak Aymara - Damiana speaks Spanish too. Sister Angela Carroll who lives in Pitumarca about 4 hours from Acora pay the women cash directly - so no middle man! Also there is friendship and trust involved - not just a business transaction. In 2006 and 2007, Ethica Accessories won the Reed Gift Award for 'Most Socially Responsible Product'. Find Ethica Products in Toys and Dolls
