Not everyone gets to be a kid.
Unicef estimated that in 2005, of the 2.2 billion children living in the world, 1 billion lived in poverty. That means every 2nd child is living in poverty. Statistically, if you have 2 children, that's like one of your children living a life of justice, and one living in poverty. A billion children will miss out on their childhood because of poverty (www.unicef.org).
As citizens whose children will enjoy access to food, shelter, education, health care, play, holidays and downtime, we are fortunate. Our belief is that as long as we have consumer choices to make, we should make our hard earned money go as far as possible. That means being thoughtful with our choices and searching for ways to help out others less fortunate. It's like our recycling efforts, we have to close the loop by buying the products that support the issues we care about.
So when we discovered the Global Fund for Children range of books we were thrilled, as the books all have a great message for children about valuing diversity, and GFC uses the sale of the books to fund grass roots projects for children living in poverty. Generation Wonder first heard of GFC after they won a recognition award on the Oprah Winfrey Show. GFC's mission is to advance the dignity of children and youth around the world. GFC pursues its mission making small grants to innovative community-based organizations working with some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable children and youth.
Through the sales of their books, Global Fund for Children raises funds to support its community-based educational programs around the world. From making its first grant in 1997 of $4,000, Global Fund for Children now funds a program of grants to grass roots projects from around the world, in excess of $2 million. Support is provided in a number of ways – by giving scholarships to poor children to attend school, by providing after-school services to youth at risk of abandoning their studies, or by establishing classroom environments on train platforms, in boats, on beaches, or at garbage dumps.
Global Fund for Children books assist our children to value diversity and grow into caring, contributing, global citizens. They also remind us that we are much more the same than we are different.
