The wonderful story to tell the kids is...
When the devastating tsunami of 2004 hit Sri Lanka, not only were too many lives lost, but many livelihoods were also washed away.
In the craft-renowned southern coastal belt of Sri Lanka, the devastation was shocking. In an effort to bring industry and skills back to the devastated village of Marudamuni, a tsunami livelihood rehabilitation project commenced. It resulted in the formation of Peshakala Lanka Handlooms, producing unique textiles from hand dyed, handwoven fabrics. At the time the Peshakala mills provided employment and skills development for a number of local men and women, who were left with nothing after the Asian tsunami of 2004.
