We support this story because...
Mem Fox, one of Australia's most highly regarded picture-book authors tells us to "Read aloud every day because you just love being with your child, not because it's the right thing to do. Spend at least ten wildly happy minutes every single day reading aloud." (www.memfox.com)
Our book bags are made in the same handloom mill as our painting aprons.
The mill was built to revive a community devastated by the 2004 tsunami that left the craftsmen and women without jobs to sustain their families. Now, the people of Marudamuni have the opportunity to revive their ancient craft, have full time employment, receive fair pay, and look forward to an industrious future. By partnering with them, Generation Wonder has introduced them to an export relationship, and this brings great excitement to all involved.
We chose to make book bags because of the great gift that we give to children when they are exposed to the magic of books and reading, storytelling and story-making. Today’s libraries are so much better than even twenty-years ago. Take a trip with the kids to your local library, and you’ll probably find a fun area just for kids, computer games, a toy borrowing facility, and even storytime sessions - when librarians will read to, and do craft activities with a group of children.
Going to the library with their very own library bag will be an excursion the children will love. Don’t forget to tell them the special story of how their library bag makes a difference to their friends on the other side of the world!
